Informed Dental Consultations in Kelowna

Scheduled oral surgery will be thoroughly discussed with each client as every case is unique. Brushing, flossing and swishing prior to surgery is wise since your mouth may be tender afterwards. Stocking up on some soft foods including soups, puddings, applesauce and fresh fruits full of vitamin C are a great idea. Chewing is not always an option for the first few days after surgery. Enjoying smoothies may be recommended with a spoon as often, using a straw or engaging in any “sucking” motion is not a good idea as it can interfere with clotting. Dr. Sandy Crocker, Dr. Peter Mitchell and Associates in Kelowna will provide you with all of your specific after care needs and inform you on the pre-operation requirements associated with your specific form of oral sedation (such as not eating or drinking so many hours prior to your oral surgery etc.)

24-72 Hours Post Surgery

Sterilization & Care After Oral Surgery: Healing Tips for Kelowna Dental ClientsIce packs are a wonderful item to have on hand (or make up ahead of time) when you know oral surgery is on the horizon. Frozen peas, or blueberries work great if you forgot to pick up some gel ice packs. Alternatively, wrap some ice cubes in a cloth or place in Ziploc bags. It is common to experience mild bruising and swelling after having your wisdom teeth extracted or undergoing minor or major oral surgery. Use your ice compresses for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off for the first 24 hours. On the second day, you may alternate with warm compresses which will increase blood circulation and help with the healing process. The specifics of your case will be discussed with you and you will be sent home with complete aftercare instructions based on your procedure.

Aftercare medication may be prescribed depending on your situation. Be sure to follow instructions and do not to mix your medication with over the counter options or alcohol. Ensure your surgery site has adequate time to clot in order to minimize your chances of dry socket or any complications arising. While the initial few gauze changes can taste a bit unpleasant (like blood in your mouth) it is vital to leave the gauze in place for the required amount of time (often at least an hour) so that your body can form that protective blood clot and begin the healing process. Educating yourself ahead of time will ensure you know what to expect and make the entire transition easier.
