Inspiring your child to take care of their dental health can initially be tricky as most parents know. Dr. Sandy Crocker strives to make every dental visit fun and exciting for each client; regardless of their age. Creating a warm and trusting atmosphere is first and foremost for making everyone feel comfortable and relaxed during their dental visit. We recommend bringing your child in to have their smile check up as soon as baby teeth are visible; however, on average, many clients book their first official exam around age 3. Bringing your youngster with you to your own dental check-ups can help them become familiar with our smiling faces and family friendly atmosphere.

Quality Time: Family Brushing and Flossing

Sending small kids to go and brush their teeth alone is neither ideal nor recommended. Children 3 and under need help and support during brushing and flossing. Kids up to the age of 12 can benefit from extra supervision and follow up in terms of their dental care. Educate your children by getting involved in the action. Brushing your teeth alongside your child will instil positive oral hygiene habits and let them know that everyone with teeth needs to do their part. Once kids grasp that healthy oral habits are a regular part of an adult’s day too, they may be more inclined to participate. Visually inspect your child’s gum line after brushing to see if all of the plaque bacteria have been adequately removed. Calculus or tartar can form wherever unresolved plaque is allowed to build up. This hard substance is unable to be brushed away and can lead to an infection along the gum line if not properly addressed.

Healthy Oral Hygiene

Do you or your child suffer from bleeding gums during brushing and flossing? Is there any puffiness, tenderness or pain present?  Are you noticing any white spots or darker dentition on any areas of their teeth? It is vital to book your child in for a check-up if you notice discolouration of any kind. Certain medications or oral trauma can lead to a multitude of dental health changes. Please remember to update your medical records when we see you as a lot can change since your last dental appointment. Brushing first thing in the morning and before bed are essential timeframes. With less saliva production while we sleep, sugar bugs are freer to create damage during the night. Encourage your child to avoid a bottle of juice or milk at bedtime as there are copious amounts of sugar in these choices. If a bottle is absolutely necessary, we recommend making the switch to water as you gradually wean off of night time feedings.

Minimize Sugar Bugs

Tooth decay is the most common and treatable chronic childhood disease affecting children between the ages of 6 to 11 years and adolescents between 12 to 19 years. Stay proactive in between dental checkups and oral hygiene appointments by visually looking in your kids’ mouths and asking them to tell you of any pain or discomfort. Use some plaque disclosing tablets to offer everyone a visual. Understanding the key dental locations that are being missed with routine brushing and flossing can help you determine which aspects of your oral healthcare need extra attention.

Set a Toothbrush Timer

The Canadian Dental Association recommends brushing for 2 to 3 minutes at each session. Our friendly and professional team at Dr. Sandy Crocker, Dr. Peter Mitchell & Associates recommends allowing youngsters to have the freedom to brush their teeth initially in their own fashion. Learning how to manipulate a soft-bristled brush and slippery dental floss can be awkward at first while muscle memory forms in the fingers and the hands and technique is honed in. Establishing the habit that Mom or Dad will follow up and finish up will help you implement a strong routine.
