Establishing a positive relationship between dentist and child from the very first introduction will help create an atmosphere of trust and a lifetime of happy dental visits. We strive to maintain a relaxed and welcoming family-friendly dental office at Dr. Peter Mitchell. The Canadian Dental Association recommends booking your child’s initial dental visit by the age of one year or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Our welcoming staff understands that the dentist is a new place with lots of strange noises and different smells. We will ensure that everyone is feeling mellow at their first dental visit and excited to experience their premier dental chair adventure. Young patients are welcome to sit with Mom or Dad if that makes things easier. We are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have noticed with your child’s developing teeth. It is a great idea to mention what your night time feeding routine consists of and if there are any thumb-sucking or pacifier habits setting in. The more details you provide for your child’s dental chart, the better we can monitor their oral progress.

A Short Yet Comprehensive Dental Exam

The first visit is more of a friendly introduction. The opportunity to meet our friendly dental team in a great environment will help ensure ultimate comfort and security. Once your child is comfortably seated in our exciting dental chair, we can assess each tooth, their gum line and their bite. This is the perfect time to discuss oral care basics and establish whether any tooth decay is present and how to prevent it from occurring.

Patient & Parent Education

Our caring dental team at Dr. Peter Mitchell is committed to ensuring that you have all of the knowledge you require to maintain an excellent oral health care routine at home. If your child is comfortable with our magic toothbrushes and suction, we will be happy to offer a polish experience so that your child knows what to expect during future dental check-ups. We can discuss fluoride treatments what dental milestones will be happening next. Being aware of your child’s teething schedule can give you a heads up the next time you see bright red cheeks or a sad face. Teething can be painful. Sometimes wrapping a large ice cube into clean face cloth provides a soothing item to chew on as those sharp baby teeth are poking through the gums. We have lots of tips and tricks to share to help you make the most of this exciting chapter.

Setting a Positive Example

Many clients bring their young ones with them to their own dentist appointments. This is a great way to make our dental clinic a familiar and fun place to visit. Conveniently located on Springfield in central Kelowna, our family-friendly clinic is always thrilled to welcome new faces. Dr. Peter Mitchell recommend brushing and flossing in front of your child in order to establish a positive oral health care routine from day one. It is natural for your child to want to mimic your actions. Have their special infant sized toothbrush easily accessible so that they can participate each time you brush your own teeth.

Stimulating the gums with soft bristles is an excellent way to familiarize your child with this lifelong cleaning tool. Remember not to allow your child to run around with their toothbrush in their mouth as this is extremely dangerous. Try and have your child sit or stand in the same location while brushing to help establish a routine. We look forward to seeing you and your family today at our Kelowna office today! Book your family in for your oral health assessment and start the New Year on a positive note. Peter Mitchell is proud to give you numerous reasons to smile.
